On 2/3/2014 Witley & DMCC held the Weston Trophy Trial at Butser Limeworks.

The event was a South East Championship round contested by 70 riders, 4 laps of 10 sections.

The day started in dry conditions with the sections being very loose under foot. Section 1 for the Experts saw a monster climb which saw only one clean from Thomas Moss. Section 2 &3 were twisty tricky turns that didn’t appear much but extracted marks from most of the entry. A long ride round to the end of the Limeworks for sections 4 & 5 on steep chalky climbs. Section 5 a loose bare chalk camber required a committed ride to clean, Mick Marshall made it look easy.

Kevin Morphett showed all the Experts how to clean section 7 with an old school “No Stop” ride when all others failed. The Elite route on section 8 required riders to scale a steep double level climb with a nasty mass of roots at the top that defeated all in the 1988 World round. Only Thomas Moss, Ashley Newbury & Mark Cottingham reached the end cards with another epic clean from Tom. On the Inter route Mark Gammons motored up the loose climb to clean all 4 laps.

Section 9 was the steepest of the day and took marks of most riders, notable confident rides from Jamie Puttock & Gary Martin. Section 10 was a “Graded hill climb” the creation of Terry Tidbury. It was a real treat to hear the “Full Noise” committed attempts of Paul Edwards & Colin Mote on their 500cc British bikes.

On the last lap or so the rain set in and changed what had been a relatively easy morning for Yellow, Red & Blue routes into a real challenge.
