It is with great sadness that we have to record the recent passing of Pat Martin, after a brave battle with cancer over the past couple of years.
Pat was well known and loved in the Witley Club. Her cheerful disposition, lovely smile and warm welcome behind the buffet counter will be greatly missed at Witley sporting events. A number of Club members were among those at a packed memorial service on August 2nd at Woking Crematorium, where a fitting tribute to her life was given by her sons. And when Elvis closed the proceedings with ‘Love Letters’, there was not a dry eye in the house.
Our sincere sympathy goes out to John, their family and Pat’s many friends at this sad time. |

One of last year’s most successful Club evenings was the August Summer Barbeque, so we had high hopes of a good turnout for the 2011 edition.
We were not disappointed. The weather over the previous day or so had been wet (no surprise there) but during Thursday afternoon the skies cleared and it almost seemed like summer by 6pm! Not only did a good number of Witley members put in an appearance, but we were pleased to welcome members of the newly revitalised Surrey British Legion Riders.
A special attraction this time was a run out organised by Graham Ford. Around 15 bikes took part, leaving Compton at 6.15 for an enjoyable ride through Shalford, Shamley Green and Cranleigh. The route over Pitch Hill from Ewhurst to Shere threw up some interesting road surfaces following the recent rains, but all survived to complete the first part of the run through Abinger and Dorking to Ryka’s Café at Box Hill for coffee. Resurfacing of part of the Mickleham bypass caused a bit of a holdup for some, but the trip back along the A246 and the A3 via West Clandon was over all too soon. The Legion car park, in my view at least, now accommodated more motorcycles than had been seen at a Witley Club night for quite a number of years!

The county of Hampshire has some fantastic B-roads, tarmac lanes and byways. The Witley 100 Long Distance Trial brings them all together with some great trials sections and an exciting timed special test at the finish to make the best possible day out on two wheels – not to mention a fair test of machine and rider!
This year, once again, the event starts at Down Farm near Odiham Airfield and the (approximately) 100-mile route will take you on a whistle-stop tour of open countryside, charming villages and sunken lanes. The comprehensive road-book - acknowledged as one of the best of its type – describes every junction on the route, along with approximate mileages between, and used with care will guide you reliably to the finish.
Apart from the special test, which will decide positions in case of a tie, there is no speed element in the competition, which is run under ACU rules and authorisation. The trials sections, which are set up along the green lanes themselves, will be accessible to novice riders will also be noted in the road-book. Marks are lost for footing, stopping - or falling off - in the sections, but apart from that it's like a day's trail ride.
