It always happens to someone else – well, that’s a fact of life...

Pat and I were looking forward to 2010. The events calendar was set out, dates fixed and we were thinking about the catering and helping to run the events. We had a most wonderful holiday in Fuerteventura back in Oct/Nov after a very successful LDT (although the catering equipment gave up the ghost on us, making it not so successful on the catering side).

The Committee Meetings were very productive, although somewhat drawn out! but there seemed to be a feeling that the Committee really wanted to see the Club progress into the future with new vigour, the new members – Dave, Tracey, Michelle, Paul and Neil – putting in a vast amount of energy.

Events were getting sorted and it seemed we would go into 2010 with a well polished team. Pat and Jo catered for the Reg Bowker and I observed for the first time in 12 months. The catering made a profit and still had some stock in the freezer, all good for future events.

Just before Christmas, Pat seemed to be gaining weight; this was unusual – and she wasn’t eating more than normal. Also she had developed a nasty cough. We decided that we should contact the doctor and an appointment was made. He examined Pat and suggested an ultrasound scan and making another appointment for early the next week. On Tuesday morning we saw the doctor and the ultrasound scan that afternoon. The scanning done, we were home again. That night was a bad one for Pat! She was in agony and had very little sleep.

Editors Bit

Having some real winter made for quite an interesting way to start the New Year! Having used the opportunity of the not-Boxing-Day Enduro to get out and freeze on the bike (at a time when on most days the road surfaces were distinctly hostile to two wheels), I was nonetheless looking forward to my first January of motorcycle-commuting for a good many years.

However, with a couple of exceptions, the severity of the Arctic climate confined the motorcycles (and the pedalled kind too) to the garage. No great problem with a bit of snow, but the persistence of the ice on untreated roads was a bit much. So I made my New Year’s exercise resolution more of a reality than expected by walking to work for the better part of 2 weeks. As I write we may still not be over the winter – indeed word is that we may be in for a colder than usual first quarter, so those of you who do ride on the road at this time of year will no doubt be getting the layers piled on. Perhaps more importantly, the recent icy conditions have left Surrey’s roads even more decrepit than they were before Christmas, so extreme pothole vigilance will be even more critical!
